Thanks Mav for video, pity you havent done a top end clean up Vid, with EGR / Map and icv valve as I know mine wants doing, as it pulls like a dog, about to clean everything up tomorrow, and will do swirl flaps as well as these are a worry. Theres lots of videos on here, but most are too dark, showing only backs of hands working and rarely have what there supposed show in view, but yours was excellent, By the way, you must be near me with an accent like that (Leeds) thanks again good job
Thank you very much, I will be doing this over the weekend now I know I do not have to fork out for the plates as I am bit skint. Can I ask, what would you use to clean the inlet of all its gunk, I know my egr was filthy and was a pig to clean with engine degreaser
Hi ive recently been to look at a 320td compact e46 and was happy with it until the test drive it idled fine etc no noises and revved great, but when driving only when accelerating there was a ticking noise only when driving wouldnt do it stood still, do you have any ideas what it maybe
Fantastic Video fella, I bought my 2004 320d m sport 2.5 years and these flaps were replaced with blanks, the car has been running fine and passed each MOT, defiantly worth changing…Also I change my Engine Oil breather every long life service at 20,000 miles to keep the turbo life longer:-)
MAV thanks for the video really helpful , recently I started getting flatspots at around 200 rpm and there has been no fault codes registered. I checked couple of forums and found these open at around 2000 rpm so may be mine are sticking to the wall. Looking at your video am getting ready for tomorrow morning.
The research I carried told me that the missing flaps does not effect the Mot emmissions, but in saying that my ceviche isn’t due until next month. The flaps are fitted to conform to EU regulations that don’t apply on this country for now anyway. The shafts are held in place by two o’rings and also the EGR solenoid actuating shaft helps hold them in. Hope this helps;-)
Hi, first of all great video and well explained, my question is does removing the swirl flaps affect the emmisions which may not pass nct or mot also do the flaps slide out from the ports, thanks
no i havent tried the injector cleaner yet…thats my next purchase i think…its not worrying me too much though, as for everyday driving the car seems perfect, its only at higher revs and hard acceleration, and to be honest im a bit old for all that speed now .lol….
cheers again
I have noticed that BM’s tend to smoke a little when they are booted.Mine got better when I changed air filter and Top breather. The remapping would explain the over-fueling. One thing to consider with remapped cars. The drive train is designed to take a certain amount of torque and if it is increased then it can cause additional wear to rubber bushes and U/J’s. BMW actually advise against remapping so I never did mine. Have you tried injector cleaner?
yeah thanks for that…the air filter looks newish…changed the breather for the vortex type just for peace of mind too..was told it may have been remapped as it has only done 78000 and is really very fast for a diesel…im wondering if its overfuelling because its been remapped and will a k&n filter let more air in maybe and help the mixture under hard acceleration…cheers again
Contined: if none of the previous post help consider removing all the injectors. If you can do it yourself it will save you money, but if not confident don’t attempt it. Have them checked at a diesel fuel specialist. If they require repair then it’s up to u if u choose to repair just the faulty ones as it can be very expensive. If you repair the faulty ones put them In to the cylinders that are covered by the manifold and make a note of which ones been done.
Continud; For injectors try some injector cleaner an diesel fuel specialist will give you the best one, but it may be dearer than from discounts. If none of this works consider removing your injectors. Do it yourself if you are competent as this will save you money and have them checked at a diesel specialist. Watched them do it if you can and each injector should atomise the fuel and not squirt or leak when no pressure applied listen for a creaking noise. If they are faulty they will need repa
Black smoke is usually an indication of over fuelling. There can be a number of reasons for this. A dirty air filter can cause a restriction of air giving a higher fuel to air ratio(too much fuel not enough air). If the injectors are worn or the nozzles are clogged then this stops the fuel atomising and again causing unburnt fuel. If you have a fault on the engine management system this can also cause it, but it is unusual. So check your air filter and replace if required. For injectors try som
Nastastic.
It would be unlikely that the flap has gone into the cylinder as the clearance between the valve and it’s seat is very small. It is the screws that are causing the problem usually.
It could be as you have said that someone has removed it. With that said anything is possible. If the engine is running smoothly and not smoking then you may well find that there is no damage. If you know anyone with a compression tester borrow it and check the compression on the cylinders this will show
thanks for the reply. i haven’t been driving it over the past couple of weeks. but now i’m in a real bad situation, i took off the inlet manifold and inspected the flaps. i seen that the closest flap is gone. it snapped diagonally but the rest where ok. i’m stumped because there is no sign of it. there was also two nuts missing on the manifold maybe indicating that it had been opened before and removed. but i’m lost i can’t here the flap rattling in the engine. any suggestions on what to do?

Just to update all. I took my car for mot and it passed the emissions test with flying colours.
Hi Safesiblings, it takes about 15 to 20 mins.
Excellent video, thanks! How long does it take to get the inlet manifold off?

hi again ….mav seems to know his stuff….was wonderig if youd have any idea why mine smokes black under hard acceleration
One other thing to check is that the flap has not lodged its self in the manifold or in the head.

be better if they did a recall…..looking at how flimsy these things are i would imagine a high percentage will fail
