Good pointers. Something else to check is the MAF connector; improper connection, a broken wire, corrosion, etc. Also, to check around the MAF for leaks, make sure it’s sealed well.
Or Mazda3 forum…. I wonder if this guy had an OEM intake or not. Aftermarket can sometimes fowl things up, but he hardly got a word in and they never asked.

GRAND AM 2001 AND THE CAR GOING CRAZY THING WAS SCARY!!! IMAGINE A KID JUMPING IN FRONT. I TOOK CARE OF IT RIGHT AFTER THAT INCIDENT
ON A GRAND AM 2.4 TWINCAM A M.A.P. SENSOR HOSE WAS ALL CRACKED AND THE FUEL CONSUMPTION WAS OFF THE SCALE. PLUS ONCE I COULDN;T EVEN BRING THE CAR TO A STOP IT REVVED TO 4000RPM AND I WAS JUST HOLDING THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD IN A SMALL RESIDENTIAL AVENUE. THE SENSOR WAS FINE THE HOSE UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS ALL DRY AND CRACKED GIVING FAULTY READINGS ON MASS AIR FLOW(MAP SENSOR)
