that is only part of the reason. main point of it is to safe the synchro. with engine you put the rest of the gearbox spinning in the same speed as the wheels are forcing half of the gearbox to spin. in a way to prevent synchro from doing all the work. the thing you are talking about is fixed already when you are starting to lift the brake,you match the revs of the engine with the speed you are going. so there is no slowing down, only idiot would pop up the clutch with no gas.
If you just downshift with the clutch only, the second you let the clutch off, the engine will have gone down to 25-2700rpm, now it has to make it’s way up to 4500rpm’s to keep the same speed. This is really hard on the transmission, and makes the car lurch and lose considerable speed.
Now do the same downshift, but give the throttle a blip while the clutch is in, this raises the rpm to 4500 while you have the clutch in, so when you let it off, the motor is already at the rpm’s for 70mph in 4th
It’s to keep the engine revs matches so the car doesnt lurch and lose speed. What happens when you downshift?? The engine has to jump rpms because it’s traveling at a higher speed. so by giving the throttle a blip, you’re able to match the rpm’s with the next gear.
If you’re traveling at 70mph in fith gear the rpm will be around 3000. Downshift to fourth gear now… the car is still traveling at 70mph, but the engine has to be at 4000 or even 4500rpm to run at the same speed.
