  1. As a youngster I remember viewing this impressive car at an exhibition in Athens, Greece ca. early 1960′s. At the time of my visit with my Dad, the tall John Wayne celebrity was also at the booth. A double treat for a lad! I also remember that there was a mirror placed at the rear so that the huge exhaust pipe would be clearly visible. What a thrill to see this period video and to learn all the details of a car which is hard to forget! :-)

  2. If half of what Chrysler said in this video about this engine is true, it is a crying shame that in this year of 2012, all cars aren’t using it. My POS subaru just died because darned piston engines have so many parts that can fail ruining the whole engine. The Crhysler turbine has 1/5 the moving parts! If only… *sigh*

  3. Turbine engines are HUGELY more reliable than any piston engine, and require far far less maintenance.
This is why they are used in place of diesels on millitary vessels and large cruise ships, and why they run for literally months on end in industrial power generation and pumping applications.
They use slighty more fuel than piston engines, but not ‘a lot more’ but the fuel costs are often offset by the lower maintenance and repair costs of piston engines.

  4. 12michaelh got his facts backwards – turbines are many, many times more reliable than any piston engine. Fuel consumption and high production costs are the reason they are not practical automobile powerplants.

  5. The fact that these cars could practically run on anything that burned really threatened the big gas companies

  6. Depends on the appication, a turbo prop plane flying at faster speeds is more effiecent for distance than an ICE powered plane.

  7. turbine engines tend to be a lot less reliable than piston engines. Also they tend to burn a lot more fuel. Id still drive one if they made more though :)

  8. Unfortunately, people were not interested. Also, they were a mite on the homely side. They were trying to look futuristic…personal opinion is that they missed.
