How to Set the Ignition Timing on Your Car’s Engine

Ignition timing is one of those often-misunderstood performance concepts. But it goes like this … since air-fuel mixture burn rate doesn’t increase in direct proportion to your engine’s rpm, the faster your engine spins; the sooner fuel has to be ignited so combustion is completed at close to the same point in the cycle regardless of rpm. However, if you ignite the fuel mixture too soon, doing so can cause a ping or engine-damaging detonation. Fortunately even though it’s a delicate operation, setting the timing on your engine is fairly easy. You won’t need many tools, and even a novice DIY auto repair enthusiast can get it done.
