A seven year old boy has suffered serious head injuries in a car crash in Angus. The family of two young brothers who died in a canoeing accident in the Highlands have said they are “utterly devasted” by the loss. Five year old Ewan Beaton and his two year old brother Jamie died yesterday after their boat capsized in Loch Gairloch. The recovery operation for their father has been stood down for the day. In other news: A man who was living in Glasgow as a fake asylum seeker has been jailed for 7 years for funding terrorism. Nasserdine Menni was convicted of transferring money to the Stockholm suicide bomber. A man accused of murdering a Lanarkshire pensioner by driving over him with his own car, has claimed he killed him by accident. And in sports: Stuart McCall says he hopes to bring in new faces ahead of Friday’s transfer window deadline. The Motherwell manager will take an injury ravaged squad to play Levante in the Europa League on Thursday. Rangers have been handed a trip north to face Forres Mechanics in the Second Round of the Scottish Cup. The Ibrox club will play last year’s Highland League winners on Saturday, 29th of September. All eyes were on Gleneagles earlier as Europe Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal named his two wildcard selections. He’s given the honour to Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaert and England’s Ian Poulter.

The search for the body of a father missing after a canoe capsized in a Highland sea loch killing three young children has been stood down for a third night. 32 year old Ewen Beaton from Beauly, was in the boat when it overturned in Loch Gairloch on Sunday afternoon. In other news: Concern for patient safety has been voiced after it was revealed the number of NHS nurses and midwives in Scotland has hit a seven year low. The cuts come despite increasing demands on the under-pressure service. The Scottish Government say they’re reinvesting savings in frontline services. A jury in the trial of a man accused of killing a Lanarkshire pensioner by running him over with his own car, has been urged to divorce themselves of emotion and find him not guilty of murder. 76 year old James Simpson died while trying to stop his car being stolen from outside his home in Ashgill last November. A murder trial has been halted for a second time after the presiding judge discovered he was related by marriage to the alleged victim’s family. The first trial involving the same case was stopped after another judge realised she knew one of the witnesses. And in sports: Neil Lennon says he wants to sign three players before Friday’s transfer deadline. A member of a Westminster committee which has been investigating press standards in Britain says the Sun newspaper was right to publish pictures of a naked Prince Harry. Glasgow Labour MP Jim Sheridan said he hoped the prince would learn lessons from the affair. It comes as Rupert Murdoch’s daughter told an Edinburgh audience what she thought of the Sun’s decision to print. The paper ran the images after they were viewed by millions of people online. Olympic gold medallist Heather Stanning has arrived back home in Moray, to a heroes welcome. Hundreds turned out as the winner of Team GB’s first gold medal was driven through the streets of Elgin in an open top jeep. In other news, a jury has been told there is ‘no way’ the driver of the car which ran over a Lanarkshire pensioner would not have known he’d passed over his body. 76 year old James Simpson was killed while trying to stop his car being stolen from his home in Ashgill near Larkhall last November. And in sport, Neil Lennon won’t have major money to spend in the transfer window – even if Celtic reach the group stages of the Champions League. The Parkhead boss says he’ll spend wisely before the transfer window closes on Friday, if he has any money to spend at all. A bleak assessment of the current state of the Scottish economy has coincided with the demise of another High Street name. JJB Sports is going into administration. Up to half of its 33 Scottish stores could close. It came as Vince Cable announced the UK Government is putting £1bn into a bank designed to boost business. In other news: Some people living in Scotland’s most deprived areas have a “fatalistic” attitude to health problems such as heart disease and are almost resigned to an early death. That’s the conclusion of a parliamentary inquiry into cardiology services. The Scottish Government is being urged to do more to tackle one of the country’s biggest killers. The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said his party has to work harder to explain to voters their role in the UK Coalition. Mr Clegg conceded the Liberal Democrats have been on the back foot and said his alliance with the Conservatives was proving difficult to sell in Scotland. And in sports: Neil Lennon says he’ll rest Scott Brown for tomorrow’s Cup tie with Raith Rovers to ensure the Celtic captain will be available for Scotland’s up-coming double header. Ricky Burns is set to make the next defence of his world title in December this year. Paul di Resta says he’s delighted to have enjoyed a career best at what he describes as “the most demanding and toughest race for a car and driver”.
