euronews hi-tech – Driven to fly: cars that can take-off

www.euronews.com This rather unusual looking car can reach speeds of up to 180 kilometres an hour but that is not what makes it special. All is revealed when it unfurls it propellors; this car can also fly. The Personal Air and Land Vehicle or PAL-V is a gyrocopter that can both fly and is allowed on the road. So what do you need to drive this machine? Robert Dingemanse, CEO and founder of Dutch company PAL-V, said: “A normal drivers licence. And for flying a personal or private pilot’s licence and that’s something you get in around 20 to 30 hours worth of lessons. So it’s pretty easy in a gyrocopter. It’s a gyrocopter and that’s the easiest way of flying, also the safest way of flying.” If the PAL-V sounds like the answer to the traffic jam, there is a hitch. It requires 165 metres of runway to take-off, 30 metres to land and can only be flown from an airport. It is expected to retail for somewhere between 250000 and 300000 euros. But the PAL-V is not the only flying car – or driving plane if you prefer – coming on to the market. The US-based firm Terrafugia have just carried out successful tests on their own street-legal plane called the Transition. Terrafugia say around 100 orders have already been placed for the car, which will cost roughly the same as its European cousin. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a range of executive-size cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in various engine and body configurations. The E initially stood for Einspritzmotor, (German for fuel injection engine); a new feature in volume production vehicles at the time that the E-Class first appeared, with the E as a suffix to the engine nomenclature (eg 230E) in the 1950s. It was not until the launch of the facelifted W124 that the E was used as a prefix (ie E220) and the model referred to officially as the E-Class (or E-Klasse). At this time all Mercedes cars used fuel injection and the company felt it was not necessary to add this as a distinguishing feature. Due to the E-Class’s size and durability, the cars also frequently serve as taxis in European countries. Older models like the W123 and W124 are used in Malaysia as inter-state taxis, and the W211 is used in Singapore as a taxi. Mercedes-Benz also offers special-purpose vehicles (eg police or ambulance modifications) from the factory.[1]

Amrit intervenes in Vimmi and Hetal’s argument and tells that Hetal was not the only one responsible for the family on the verge of splitting. Amrit tells Vimmi that instead of trying to teach Hetal a lesson, she should have counseled her. She also tells Hetal that she should not try to transform the family members. She adds that just by working in her own house she doesn’t become a servant, similarly by working in his own store, Karan does not become a mere employee there. Sweety arrives and Amrit tells Vimmi and Hetal not to let her know about the incident. The Gandhis get busy preparing for Bapuji’s birthday celebration. Mona sneaks out Bapuji’s telephone diary from his room and hands it over to Sejal to note down the numbers of his ex-students. Meanwhile, Baa directs Ashiq to design an outfit for Bapuji. Bapuji arrives there and asks what is going on. Bapuji tells Kalpesh to go on a walk with him. Sejal suggest that Hetal and her family should also be invited for the birthday celebrations. Bharti agrees to it. Meanwhile, Sweety comes with Parmeet and breaks the good news that her in-laws have forgiven her and are ready to accept Sweety back into their family. Sweety’s chirpy nature and happy attitude temporarily calms the tensed atmosphere in the Bedi family. Everyone is happy when Parmeet tells them that Sweety would stay with them for two-three days before heading home. Hetal, however, gets irritated. Satnaam tells Sweety that he would chat with her after returning …
