A member of a Westminster committee which has been investigating press standards in Britain says the Sun newspaper was right to publish pictures of a naked Prince Harry. Glasgow Labour MP Jim Sheridan said he hoped the prince would learn lessons from the affair. It comes as Rupert Murdoch’s daughter told an Edinburgh audience what she thought of the Sun’s decision to print. The paper ran the images after they were viewed by millions of people online. Olympic gold medallist Heather Stanning has arrived back home in Moray, to a heroes welcome. Hundreds turned out as the winner of Team GB’s first gold medal was driven through the streets of Elgin in an open top jeep. In other news, a jury has been told there is ‘no way’ the driver of the car which ran over a Lanarkshire pensioner would not have known he’d passed over his body. 76 year old James Simpson was killed while trying to stop his car being stolen from his home in Ashgill near Larkhall last November. And in sport, Neil Lennon won’t have major money to spend in the transfer window – even if Celtic reach the group stages of the Champions League. The Parkhead boss says he’ll spend wisely before the transfer window closes on Friday, if he has any money to spend at all. Lennon has been dealt a blow with Beram Kayal and Joe Ledley ruled out for much of September.

A bleak assessment of the current state of the Scottish economy has coincided with the demise of another High Street name. JJB Sports is going into administration. Up to half of its 33 Scottish stores could close. It came as Vince Cable announced the UK Government is putting £1bn into a bank designed to boost business. In other news: Some people living in Scotland’s most deprived areas have a “fatalistic” attitude to health problems such as heart disease and are almost resigned to an early death. That’s the conclusion of a parliamentary inquiry into cardiology services. The Scottish Government is being urged to do more to tackle one of the country’s biggest killers. The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said his party has to work harder to explain to voters their role in the UK Coalition. Mr Clegg conceded the Liberal Democrats have been on the back foot and said his alliance with the Conservatives was proving difficult to sell in Scotland. And in sports: Neil Lennon says he’ll rest Scott Brown for tomorrow’s Cup tie with Raith Rovers to ensure the Celtic captain will be available for Scotland’s up-coming double header. Ricky Burns is set to make the next defence of his world title in December this year. Paul di Resta says he’s delighted to have enjoyed a career best at what he describes as “the most demanding and toughest race for a car and driver”.

In other news, retailers in Glasgow are expecting this weekend to be their busiest this year and fears are growing for two people still missing following a farmhouse blaze near Falkirk yesterday. A man accused of murdering a pensioner with his own car allegedly admitted running him over. 76 year old James Simpson was killed as he tried to stop his car being stolen from his Lanarkshire home last November. Today a friend of the accused told the jury that Christopher Grenfell said Mr Simpson was lying on the ground when he drove away. A review published today has revealed that Scottish ambulances attend more serious incidents than before and their response times have been reduced. Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed the news but has warned there’s no room for complacency. In other news, tired of being abused by angry motorists for rising fuel price, petrol station owners across the country are hitting back. They’re supporting a campaign to show drivers just how much of the money paid at the pump is made up of tax, claiming they’re making only pennies for every thirty pounds spent on their forecourts. And in sport, Rangers have signed French defender Sebastian Faure on a 3 year deal, after a successful trial at the club. The 20-year-old won’t feature in the Ramsden’s Cup second round clash with Falkirk tonight as the Ibrox club await international clearance.

The former editor of the News of the World in Scotland has been arrested and charged in connection with Tommy Sheridan’s defamation case against the newspaper six years ago. Bob Bird has been accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Mr Bird protested his innocence and said he was “sad it has come to this.” In other news: “No more awards for just doing your job.” That was the message from a group of MPs who want to overhaul the honours system. They claim too many civil servants and celebrities are scooping everything from MBE’s to knighthoods. They also say Scotland is getting too many awards for its size. But the government maintain the vast majority of awards go to community heroes. The housing charity Shelter says it’s deeply concerned at a sharp rise in the number of people contacting them over fears about losing their home. The organisation received over fourteen thousand calls in the first six months of 2012 – a rise of almost forty percent in two years. A jury is considering its verdict in the case of a man accused of murdering a Lanarkshire pensioner by driving over him with his own car. Christopher Grenfell has admitted killing 76 year old James Simpson while trying to steal his car from outside his home, but he says it was an accident.
