Matthew Brown courted celebrities for his record breaking bid but was arrested in Cornwall after making up a catalogue of lies and exposed as bogus. Investigations are continuing into a crash which left two 17 year-old boys dead when their car left the road and hit a tree in Aberdeen. In other news: Eight new cases of Legionnaire’s disease have been confirmed in Edinburgh – but there have been no more fatalities and the number of people who’re critically ill has fallen. Two men have been detained in connection with the deaths of a father and his two children, following a fire at their home in Helensburgh. The world’s biggest spirit producer is investing a billion pounds in the Scotch whisky industry over the next five years. An Inverness man who died after being hit by a taxi in Edinburgh has been named by police. Negotiations that’ll shape the future of Scotland’s fishing industry reach a vital stage in Europe next week. A public inquiry into plans for a controversial waste incinerator in Invergordon will now consider the potential effects of air pollution and human health. And in sports: From now on Scottish clubs will have to conduct investigations into prospective new owners.

A Dundee grandmother has been spared a five-year jail sentence for keeping a Second World War heirloom gun. In other news, a young north east mum has denied her ex-boyfriend’s claims that she played a shaking game with her baby which could have caused the infant’s death. The Scottish Government is to publish its legal advice on an independent Scotland remaining a member of the European Union. It comes as opposition leaders at Holyrood pounced on comments by the President of the European Commission which seem to suggest Scotland might have to re-apply for membership. The latest attempt to reduce the number of sex attacks in Scotland will see attitudes towards rape challenged. New adverts are being launched as part of the campaign which, this time, targets men. Police say they want to expose the myths surrounding what constitutes rape. An international design competition has been launched to transform the civic heart of Glasgow. The work on the city’s George Square is expected to begin next year. Councillors agreed to initial plans to give designers a “blank canvas” by approving the removal of all the statues, with the exception of the Cenotaph. Britain’s most successful Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy, has been announced as the first official ambassador of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Organisers believe the six-times Olympic gold medallist will inspire people to get behind the Glasgow games over the next two years. There are known as the Highland Tiger, now a wildlife charity is calling for urgent action to save the Scottish Wildcat, claiming there are just 35 left living in the wild.
