A speeding drunk driver has admitted causing the deaths of two Good Samaritans who were trying to free an elderly woman from the wreckage of her crashed car. The Prime Minister’s chief spin doctor Andy Coulson has told the Sheridan Perjury trial that he did not set out to ruin the former MSP’s life. In other news, retailers in Glasgow are expecting this weekend to be their busiest this year and fears are growing for two people still missing following a farmhouse blaze near Falkirk yesterday. A man accused of murdering a pensioner with his own car allegedly admitted running him over. 76 year old James Simpson was killed as he tried to stop his car being stolen from his Lanarkshire home last November. Today a friend of the accused told the jury that Christopher Grenfell said Mr Simpson was lying on the ground when he drove away. A review published today has revealed that Scottish ambulances attend more serious incidents than before and their response times have been reduced. Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed the news but has warned there’s no room for complacency. In other news, tired of being abused by angry motorists for rising fuel price, petrol station owners across the country are hitting back. They’re supporting a campaign to show drivers just how much of the money paid at the pump is made up of tax, claiming they’re making only pennies for every thirty pounds spent on their forecourts. And in sport, Rangers have signed French defender Sebastian Faure on a 3 year deal, after a successful trial at the club. The 20-year-old won’t feature in the Ramsden’s Cup second round clash with Falkirk tonight as the Ibrox club await international clearance.

The former editor of the News of the World in Scotland has been arrested and charged in connection with Tommy Sheridan’s defamation case against the newspaper six years ago. Bob Bird has been accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Mr Bird protested his innocence and said he was “sad it has come to this.” In other news: “No more awards for just doing your job.” That was the message from a group of MPs who want to overhaul the honours system. They claim too many civil servants and celebrities are scooping everything from MBE’s to knighthoods. They also say Scotland is getting too many awards for its size. But the government maintain the vast majority of awards go to community heroes. The housing charity Shelter says it’s deeply concerned at a sharp rise in the number of people contacting them over fears about losing their home. The organisation received over fourteen thousand calls in the first six months of 2012 – a rise of almost forty percent in two years. A jury is considering its verdict in the case of a man accused of murdering a Lanarkshire pensioner by driving over him with his own car. Christopher Grenfell has admitted killing 76 year old James Simpson while trying to steal his car from outside his home, but he says it was an accident. The National Union of Mineworkers is backing calls for an inquiry into the policing of the miners’ strike in Scotland 28 years ago. Two Labour politicians have asked the Scottish government to conduct an independent review of the convictions of nearly 500 miners who were convicted during the bitter year long dispute. The family of an Edinburgh man who died after being hit by a car at the weekend say they have lost the most amazing husband, father, son and brother. In other news, carers and trade unionists have joined forces to challenge Glasgow city council reforms of day services for people with learning disabilities. And finally in sport, legal action has been raised on behalf of 67 Rangers players over the transfer of contracts from the Ibrox oldco to the newco.
