Erica Olson is by far one of the most eloquent and gifted strategists that I have ever encountered. I’ve never seen anyone articulate such valuable information within a framework of five minutes or less.
The terms Achievable, Attainable, Realistic are similar. I’ve seen “A” as Accountable, which would be similar to Responsible, and I’ve used “R” for Results-oriented because goals should focus on the outcome or end, versus the process or means to that end.
Nonsense. By your definition Achievable and Realistic are more or less the same thing and so do not require separate headings. E.g. Are our objectives achievable/attainable? Yes. Well then they are realistic. Our objectives are realistic because they are achievable with the resources we have…I’m sure you get the point by now. I’m with Erica and best practices on this one.

Thanks for the video. It’s very informative and helpful. Much easier to watch a video to read a long page on a website.
I understand your explanations about the changes o R and A.
Sometimes, the theory needs to be improved to work on real world of business.
I like to think “R” is for “Rewarding”. Putting emphasis on the benefit (the Reward) of achieving the goal helps one prioritize it relative to alternative pursuits– whether personal or business oriented.
Ideally, we spend our time on activities that we find most rewarding and help us achieve the goals we hold most dear.
Greetings!
First, thanks for this video! I am the leader of a band where three other guys look to me to pilot our musical career toward a goal of “Thousands of screaming fans”. After watching this video, (which I’ll be sending to them because I like what you’re teaching and well…yeah..you’re hot), we, unlike a lot of bands, actually communicate with each other. With this method, we can more effectively divide and conquer to achieve our goal by playing to each of our strengths and abilities.
Bah, people keep changing what SMART means – and what about people who don’t work in an organisation but are going for projects in their own right? What then? Eh? Answer that one why don’t you.

Rooney scored a great goal today against the Ukraine. It was SMART all right, he really used his head.
