Smart-throttle technology enables the brake pedal to override the accelerator in an emergency situation. Our tests show that a brake override is practical in the real world, without diminishing enthusiast driving.

  1. when push comes to shove the hall equation changes. its easy to say that now, but even if you know that shifting to neutral will stop the car i don’t think you would be able to do that when you are steering your wheel to avoid to hit the other object. it only takes 2 seconds.

  2. Don’t ever buy a Toyota or their subsidiaries. Deadly lethal weapon.

  3. A few newer cars have the ability to turn off all the nannies with one button.

These technologies have to be implemented to prevent stupid, unnecessary lawsuits over dumb people who can’t drive.

  4. All Nissan model has equipped with this technology break override system since 2002.
    So advance.

  5. turbo diesel engines can have turbo failure causing oil to feed into the intake which will actually fuel the engine. The engine will not shut off even if you turn the key to off and cut the fuel lines. Search “runaway engine” and see.

  6. I don’t understand what the big deal is about this accelerator stuck debacle. All you have to do is push the clutch in or put it in nuetral. If you can’t think of that when driving then you probably shouldn’t be driving a car at all. These are basic fundamentals.

  7. So-called “Sudden” or “unintended” acceleration is not a mechanical or electrical problem, it is a “legal” problem. It is the product of poor drivers combined with the trial lawyers. Above all, it is the latest in shakedown schemes.

  8. Heel and toe eh?

    YEAH RIGHT!

I have a size 12 1/2 foot that is wide too and I can still heel and tow better than this guy. The way he performed this looks way more unsafe.

Anyway, this is why I drive older cars. None of the electronic nanny devices can get into my way strictly cause they aren’t there =D

  9. you guys just abuse every single car you get huh? like that other video with the toyota’s bouncing off the rev limiter? hahha

  10. Also blame push button starters some of which take 3 seconds which is 3 seconds too long turn off the engine.

  11. Why not just ban push button starters that require 3 seconds for shutdown and mandate a key or switch that can shut down the engine in half a second?

  12. Pretty much The Device that Shuts Down your Cruise Control when you Hit the Brakes, Old technolgy used in a Slightly Different Way ! My 82 Mustang had This. Only this Shutts Down throttle regardless if the Cruise Control is Activated or Not.

  13. Great report. Anyone who is still blaming the drivers for not hitting the brakes when their toyota decides to run wild needs to watch to this.

  14. was that GTi a shift? is that why there were three pedals? clutch, brake, gas?

  15. as amazing as the technology seems I would have to disable this for reason the human needs the ultimate decision in certain cases this can be safer. if not most.

  16. Nissan’s been doing this for many years……….Good advertising for Toyota there CR. A little misleading….

  17. I’m assuming that power-assist is lost, because the WOT prevents any vacuum needed to operate the brake booster. What does anyone else have to say? The need for a “technology” as this, seems rather stupid. This is all because of those drive-by-wire throttle controls. Nothing has a trusty mechanical linkage anymore. One more thing to fuck up on a car, and cause the check engine light to come on.

  18. why can’t i just have a mechanically linked accelerator, gas, and steering controls? with all these electronic gizmos comes more crap to go wrong, more inherent costs, and more weight…even the air force still uses mechanical linkages as their emergency systems

  19. What is wrong with just turning the IGNITION OFF ?
Having learned to drive where there is snow on the ground 8 month of the Year !!!!
We had to learn a few tricks when the Gas pedal got stuck in melted snow and it would freeze again over night

  20. They killed this car for me when they don’t offer a manual transmission in the new ones. Also, getting rid of the double wishbone suspension

  21. I wouldn’t buy a Hyundai. My mom has a 2006 Tucson and the Transmission went out at under 50k miles…

  22. Definitely! Honda or Toyota (RAV4 for suv or any other model) & Hyundai (Tucson…) are very reliable. If you do yer research w/ C.R., you can see these makers have incredibly reliable stats down the line.

  23. I love my moms 08 CR-V But it is under powered and its small wheels and tire would be worthless off road, even with it’s AWD. I work for Toyota and the late model RAV4 has an available 3.5L V6 and AWD that surpasses anything else in it’s class both on road and off. If you don’t believe me just look up the stats and compare.

  24. Would you recommend this for a high school student for when they get their license in summer 2012?

  25. Change the tires, ours had the cheapo continentals, we upgraded to Michelins and it cut the road noise down a lot.

  26. My wife has a 08 crv. 30 mpg and never had a problem. great cars, has almost 100k on it. The only thing replaced were the tires.

  27. true, however just look at the uploaded date under the video. Uploaded march 2010, so its a 2010 model

  28. great review. i agree w/ everything he said on its practicality and no-nonsense package.

  29. This is *NOT* the 2011 which has a redesigned fascia and improved amenities.

  30. honda has this terrible trait of road noise in all of their cars. I own one and after u get past the new car happiness , it gets annoying at freeway speeds.
