I like the M E36 Better than the E46. Less understeer and it was lighter on its feet and much less problems. 240 hp was plenty of power for 3000 pounds.
If you have the money to maintain it the NSX is an awesome car. Look into maintenance cost before you purchase one. Replace the timing belt unless the owner has proof that it has been done recently. I think that’s a $1,500 job.
They so outshine the BRZ. Maintenance (although they are reliable)is a bitch on both of those cars. Even if you buy one for 25k with 50k miles on it. When 3 years are up if you drive both cars the same mileage the BRZ will be far cheaper. If you can afford a new Boxter a used one is a bargain. I almost bought a new Boxter over the BRZ. I drive 25k a year I could not see doing that to the Boxter. As a second or third car a used Boxter would excel.
That is one hell of a car. It is not really a true M engine in the US we have 240 hp vs 300 Canada. The US engine is more reliable than the pure M’s that follow it. If you can find and original owner that has all the maintenance records you should be fine. Do not go over 100k or under 40k. If it is well maintained that should give you at least another 50 to 60k before the bigger problems start. That is one BMW that defiantly outshines the BRZ. Blow the motor and you are up to BRZ prices.
NA1 NSX
I like the 1987 240 sx and the 1991 Sentra SER. Those two cars offer the closest feel of the brz. Everything else from Nissan just lacks the type of communication with the road that you get with the BRZ. The Sentra SER was stupid good especially for a FWD car. I drove the 240 when it first hit the streets it had a slow revving 2.4 liter. Otherwise it was a blast. The SER motor in the 240sx would have been a dream. The Sertra SER can’t be worth more than $1500 bucks. $4000 for a nice stock 240.
Fyi the photo given at the end is a m3 çsl…. way different league than the e46 m3.

Friend had a ’97 MR2 with less than 20K miles, picked it up for $14k. Personally, i’d go for the G8 with the 6.0, affordable power sedan.
someone care to offer advice? i’d love an E36 M3 and at around $10-12k for low mileage, it sounds like a good deal. but i hear they’re terribly unreliable, maintenance costs a small fortune, and they’re hard to find with low mileage to begin with. anyone have an alternative? (need decent storage space so 350Z, S2k, etc. are out)
For the 20-25k range your talking about i would take a c5 zo6 for sure.

I’d have an s2k , elise , m3 , z3 m, mr2, 928 , mx-5, or an old evo over a brz..you are calling a car that costs 30 thousand us dollars cheap? 30 thousand dollars for a 2 liter 200 hp 2 seater? buy an s2k with high mileage sell the motor buy a new warrantied rebuilt motor or rebuild it yourself if in good shape; add brakes and suspension….repaint. Why would anyone on earth buy a brz? the e46 has one of the best engines ever made … wards from 01-03 can attest to that…as can Guiness
BRZ and add a supercharger when the 3 yr warranty runs out.
