No Spark Diagnosis (Honda) – EricTheCarGuy

It’s been a while, I’ve missed you. In this little tutorial I’m covering the basics of diagnosing a Honda ignition system. I had some technical difficulties while doing this one (I forgot to press record on a couple of occasions and missed a couple of shots) and didn’t get all that I had hoped in this video. In particular I was hoping to show the use of a test light to do this diagnosis but didn’t get all the footage necessary so I’ll go back and shoot that at a later date. I’m hoping there is enough information here to get you started in understanding and diagnosing your ignition system so that you don’t have to buy stuff you don’t need trying to fix a problem. Here is a link to a place where you might find the tool I used in the video www.google.com I want to give a shout out to Greg Insco who donated his car for this video, he’s trying to get on some show called Survivor next season and I helped him with his application video. You can check him and the video out via the link below. I just checked the link and I see that he hasn’t posted it yet but says he will on the 28th of December 2009 so keep checking back on that. www.youtube.com As always you can find me at EricTheCarGuy.com, as I said in the video there are new things coming to the site for 2010 so keep checking back to check those out. – Click below and Stay Dirty Visit me at EricTheCarGuy.com ericthecarguy.com Visit EricTheCarGuy Forum www.ericthecarguy.com Visit my Facebook Page: www.facebook.com –Stay

  3. Hey Eric, my 96 accord is not throwing out spark at the coil, the spark plug wires and the rotor. Bought a new distributor because my old ignitor one fried. The distributor is new, tested the coil and it was good and i also have new spark plug wires. It cranks and cranks but doesn’t turn over….what could be the problem. The battery is brand new. Any ideas…anyone

  4. My air bags deployed from hitting a large bump/man hole. Car ran good prior. Now it cranks no start. There is no spark at the plug. I will go further down the line towards dizzy but… if air bags deployed should the car still be able to run or not? 96′ Honda Civic EX.

  5. thanks for the reply, Yes i was directed to check that by another forum. It gives the proper resistances. I also just completely re soldered every joint on the main relay with flux core and its still the same problem.

  6. Have you checked the engine coolant temp. sensor for proper signal/ operation?

  7. ok so did the test by hooking a wire to a ground then holding it next to the little srping and no spark, now you show to hold it on the negative side of the coil, but what do you ground it to or hook up your test light to?? (at 6:08 on the video)

  8. Eric the car Guy….. Awesome, thank you for the info on the Honda’s mine just quit. it’s a 92 accord, purchased new, with 109K miles. and there is no spark.. 10. Thanks Eric this helped me a lot. I go by your videos cause you actually show what’s going on. I have fixed numerous cars by watching your videos. Any bad comments you get don’t worry about them and keep up the good work. Thanks.

  11. hi, i have a problem where the car will start, but sometimes it takes two or more tries. 96 accord dx mt. When its hot (used recently) always starts in one crank. cold gives harder starts. new plugs, cap and rotor, wires, fuel filter, battery, etc. question i am asking is if you think the cold hard start would be more fuel or spark issue. thanks.

  12. Hey eric i have a 94 honda prelude. when car is cold car starts fine, but when car gets to normal temp and shut the car off it doesnt want to start.????? please help thanks alot

  13. I was having a no start earlier after repainting my valve cover, and cleaning up the coil pack & wires (98 Eclipse N/T). It smelled like a lot of fuel, so I thought maybe it was flooded or fouled spark plugs. I tried to crank for longer like you mentioned before – didn’t work. I tested & verified spark at all 4 wires – but no start. Then, I charged the battery for like 5 minutes, tried again and it starts. How do you explain this? Runs now, but choppy.

  14. Eric when Im testing for a no spark condition on my Honda accord can I use a multi meter instead of a test light?
