Extraordinary car – well, more of a controlled explosion than a car. The S1 didn’t so much romp through rally stages as eat them whole. Genuine respect to the people who drove these in anger. The wingless versions were undoubtedly prettier (if you can call an S1 pretty) but you can see why Audi put the fins on – they were concerned about an unauthorised Moon landing.
i´m one of those priviledged who drove these cars: our Audi was allthough the long wheel base model, still 20 valve engine… we had 10 valve urquattro too(ex-works both). and one of the sexiest sound machine ever: mg metro 6r4… they were awesome cars, i would give my left arm to drive them again…
