Honda Accord and Civic Transmission Fluid Change

I show you how easy it is to change your transmission fluid on a 1997 Honda Accord. This process applies to Civics as well. A special note. Some 90s Civics have a CVT transmission use Honda CVT fluid on them otherwise use ATF Z1 (now ATF DW1) for a non CVT automatic transmission. Honda fluid part numbers: ATF Z1 Part Number: 08200-9001 (Discontinued) Replaced by: ATF DW1 Part Number 08200-9008 CVT Fluid: 08200-9006 Since the production of this video Honda has discontinued ATF-Z1 and replaced it with ATF-DW1 it’s a drop in replacement for vehicles that used ATF Z1. The fluid change interval by Honda is every 30000 miles. Intro and outro music by Kevin Macleod (Incompetech.com).

  1. DW1 is Honda’s official replacement for any vehicle that used ATF-Z1.

The biggest obstacle is getting that stubborn drain bolt off. Just have a long handled ratchet, a pipe to slip over your ratchets handle, or a 3/8″ breaker bar for the added leverage needed to crack it loose.

For some reason the drain bolts on these transmissions really get stuck on there.

  2. Would you still recommend using ATF-DW1 on a automatic 94 Accord LX 2.2?
Also thanks for the upload, I plan on doing it myself next week doesn’t seem to complex.

  3. Yes every 30K is the factory spec.

No argument here torquing is a good idea. But doing repairs for yourself is one thing if you were on the flat rate system you’d change your mind.

If you start using a torque wrench for every fastener the time invested (finding the values and adjusting the tool for the many different values) adds up you only get paid Mitchell time for a repair. Any extra time you spend on a repair is unpaid labor. Referring to repairs not fluid changes.

    Thanks For Watching

  4. Meh, I have been working on cars a long time myself including a similar model Honda. I work in a DIY bay that has ASE mechanics available to answer questions and assist as needed. I also make sure I have some form of authorized service manual. Point being I don’t think it is wise to guesstimate or assume. Same reason why I don’t trust a shop to do my oil change, often they are too lazy to look up your car and either over or under-fill. Also I think you said 30K trans fluid change, it that right?

  5. When you work on cars for long enough you develop a feel for tightening down fasteners.

You’d be hard pressed to find a shop using a torque wrench on anything besides critical engine parts like bearing caps and cylinder head bolts for example and lug nuts if you’re lucky.

But there’s nothing wrong with using a torque wrench if that makes you more comfortable.

  6. great vid man, thx for the upload deff will be looking forward to doing this on my civic

  7. Hi, could you put up a video on how to change transmission fluid and filter on a Mitsubishi galant please?

  8. If it’s an automatic Honda’s new fluid is ATF-DW1 (replaces ATF-Z1) it’s around 5 dollars a quart. If you’re on a budget just do a quick change you’ll need 3 quarts. But get 4 since you may need to top it off when you check the level after driving.

Honda doesn’t recommend flushing the older vehicles just change the fluid drive it for awhile and change it again repeat the process 3 times. That is Honda’s procedure for getting all of the old fluid out.

  9. Thanks for the video ….I have a 93 Honda accord lx …what’s the best fluid for my car and I have no idea if it’s ever been flushed so what do you suggest? And in on a budget so how much am I looking to spend? Thank you.

  10. The filters on these transmissions are internal and are only accessible during an overhaul so no.

  11. Yeah Honda calls it ATF DW1 now. I believe Z1 was fossil based and DW1 is synthetic. That’s the main difference as for the formulation Honda never divulges it.

DW1 will replace Z1 in all Honda automatic transmissions except CVTs which require their own special fluid.

I’m going to put an annotation to the updated DW1 part number in the video. I keep forgetting to do it.

    Thanks For Watching.

  12. Thank you. I am gonna do it my self now and I had been driving since 76 and never done it. Excellent video. !

  13. my honda accord 97 ex V6 has a ATF bolt and a dip stick for the tranny fluid. it says to use the ATF filler bolt to fill it tup but can I still use the dip stick hole?

  14. Great video. I have a Honda accord that needs a trans fluid change. Watching this video helped a lot. Thanks!!

  15. this is a really great tut for this…it makes me want to be a better mechanic in which i’m a DIY one.

  16. Yeah, l know what you’re saying. l’d love to fix my own car, but a Joe Schmo like me who doesn’t know anything in mechanic at all will mess things up, l intend to go to school for mechanic in the future even if it’s just to fix my own car, but right now the wifey is in nursing school full time that leave only me to do everything, when she’s done with school and get a decent paying job then it’ll be my time to go to school for mechanic in the mean time l’ll watch your videos and give it a try.

  17. Lets say you use a radiator stop leak product it plugs your leak then later fails the engine overheats and you blow a head gasket.

So you attempted to save 70 bucks for a radiator now you’ll need a 110 dollar head gasket kit (a 6 hour job to replace) plus head machining fees at a machine shop AND you still need a new radiator.

    Just an example.

  18. I intend to produce some of those videos in the future.

As for stop leak products stay away from them if you have a leak fix it.

You’ll come to find in auto repair it’s not the cost of parts that’s the large part of the bill it the cost in labor to get to them. If you are repairing it yourself your labor is free and the proper repairs are inexpensive.

  19. l went to your channel and l didn’t see any videos on how to replace the Disc Brake Rotors, Brake Pads, Brake Calipers, Brake Master Cylinder, Brake Fluid Flush, Brake Fluid Bleeding, Wheel Bearings, CV Front Axles… is there any future plan to upload some of these videos? From all the comments that l’ve seen posted in here you’ve helped a lot of people save some money and do you think some of those products work like Oil Leak Stop, radiator Stop Leak, Engine Performance, Fuel lnjector Cleaner?
